Fraport AG has just released a new version of its Frankfurt Airport app. The technology enables cross-media navigation via various devices. An online shop is also new.
Version 3.0 of the Frankfurt Airport app now offers cross-media indoor navigation to the approx. 60 million passengers who annually walk through the doors of Germany’s largest airport. Travelers can now customize their visit to the airport via the airport’s new travel homepage www.frankfurt-airport.com as well as via the large “Interactive Airport Desk” (I-AID) touchscreens in the terminal and via the smartphone app. Bookmarked locations, routes and flights are accessible at any time on all devices. Thus planning your airport visit can begin right from your very own home. The heart of the app is the interactive map material from the indoor navigation and indoor services specialists at infsoft GmbH.
POSITIONING VIA WIFI
Positioning takes place across platforms via WiFi. The user does not need to be connected to the hotspots and his/her actual position can be viewed at all times on the map. Using the app and the I-AID, he/she can navigate to POIs, one of the 500 stores or to the gates. The navigation route can be transmitted via QR code from the touchscreen to the smartphone, and it is also available in a barrier-free version.
MAKING PURCHASES IN THE ONLINE SHOP WHILE ON THE GO
The integrated online shop is also new. It follows the click & collect principle. While on the go, passengers can order 15,000 products from the current three providers and then pick up their purchases in the respective store in the airport. This service will be expanded over the coming years as part of the digital strategy.
DIGITAL MAPS AS THE FOUNDATION
infsoft GmbH was responsible for the cross-media maps and navigation for the implementation of the ANDROID and iOS apps. SDKs (software developer kits) from infsoft were used here. Approx. one million square meters and 30 kilometers of routes were digitized on-site. Approx. 100 digital route graphics were created to mimic the signs in the buildings. Fraport AG has been an infsoft customer since 2010. Additional features of the Frankfurt Airport app 3.0 include: the display of wait times at security checkpoints, automatic positioning on an interactive airport map with all important POIs, the display of bookmarked flights and change notifications, as well as info on parking, arrivals and departures and additional services. Together with the free WiFi at the Frankfurt Airport, this app makes traveling more comfortable and easier.
