Since its founding in 2005, infsoft has been actively shaping the world of indoor positioning and location-based services. From the first platform solution to innovative hardware and user-centered applications, the company has continuously evolved over the past 20 years – strengthening partnerships and introducing new technologies along the way.
An overview of the most important milestones from 2005 to 2025
2005
- Tobias Donaubauer founds infsoft GmbH during his studies in Computer Science and Mathematics.
- Terminal solutions are deployed in numerous public buildings, including a visitor guidance terminal developed by us for the University Hospital Würzburg.
- As mobile devices were not yet widespread, positioning is achieved via small WLAN-enabled tags for people and assets, originally called “GOin.tag”.
2006
- Before the smartphone era, many users relied on PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) running Windows Mobile, without mobile internet access or phone functionality.
- Based on this, infsoft develops a portable visitor guidance solution for the Daimler plant in Sindelfingen.

2007
- With the launch of the first iPhone, the smartphone mass market begins – initially without GPS or modern sensors such as magnetometer or accelerometer.
- Nevertheless, positioning is already possible by evaluating known WLAN access points (approx. 5–15 m accuracy).
2008
- The iPhone 3G integrates a GPS receiver for the first time, enabling precise outdoor navigation.
- infsoft develops the “Lufthansa Navigator”, one of the first smartphone apps that still uses WLAN-based indoor positioning.
- Enhanced hardware significantly improves accuracy and the user experience.

2011
- Apple introduces system-level restrictions on WiFi-based positioning. As a result, client-side positioning on iOS devices is effectively no longer feasible for the period up to 2013.
- On Android, WiFi positioning continues to be available without limitations.
2012
- With the launch of the first infsoft Locator Nodes, infsoft introduces its own positioning hardware.
- This enables infrastructure-based positioning independent of the end device – a key milestone for professional asset tracking.

2013
- iOS 7 introduces BLE-based positioning via the iBeacon standard.
- infsoft integrates BLE into its apps and Locator Nodes, expanding the technology foundation for indoor navigation and positioning.
2014
- Data integration, sensors, and building infrastructure move into the spotlight.
- The first comprehensive smart building concepts are developed.
- infsoft expands and moves into new premises with 23 workstations and two meeting rooms.

2015
- “Back to the roots”: The interactive terminal solution “Interactive Airport Desk” (I-AID) becomes part of Fraport AG’s digitalization strategy.
2016
- The infsoft LocAware platform® becomes the central solution for data management, visualization, and integration.
- Ultra Wideband (UWB) is deployed for the first time to enable highly precise indoor positioning.

2017
- The hardware portfolio is expanded to include UWB, RFID, and LoRa/BLE tags.
- Use cases include inventory management, theft protection, workspace utilization, and evacuation tracking across industry, healthcare, and logistics.

2018
- Introduction of the infsoft Locator Node AoA for more precise BLE positioning.
- The hardware integrates extensive sensor technology such as infrared, ultrasound, temperature, humidity, CO₂, and air pressure – enabling comprehensive process and condition monitoring.
2019
- infsoft introduces E-Ink Display Beacons that combine dynamic content with asset tracking.
- The company has also been awarded certification according to ISO 9001:2015.
- Before the pandemic, infsoft’s stationary multi-touch terminals were already being used in the healthcare sector to support wayfinding in hospitals – for example at Helios Klinikum Erfurt.

2020
- Introduction of infsoft Locator Beacons for indoor navigation and BLE tracking, along with the launch of the infsoft Locator Node 1400.
- Move to the new office at Junkers-Ring.
- The infsoft LocAware platform® undergoes a fundamental functional and visual redesign.

2021
- Introduction of the infsoft Smart Plug. In addition to its repeater functionality, it enables – for the first time – the measurement of energy consumption of connected devices. This allows companies not only to extend their BLE infrastructure, but also to capture transparent consumption data at the same time – an important component for energy efficiency strategies and sustainability initiatives.
2022
- Locator Beacons support combined BLE/UWB positioning for the first time.
- Introduction of the infsoft AI Occupancy Sensors.

2023
- Introduction of the infsoft Locator Node Dongle – compact, flexible, and optimized in design compared to the Locator Node 1400.
- The Workplace Experience App receives extensive functional enhancements with a strong focus on intuitive and efficient user experience.
2024
- Ramona Kraus assumes management of the company.
- Introduction of the infsoft Locator Node PoE – a compact hardware generation designed to reduce costs, package size, and delivery effort.
- Certification according to ISO/IEC 27001.
- First infsoft Community Day at Roche Diagnostics and launch of the new Community Hub.
2025
infsoft celebrates its 20th company anniversary and continues its international expansion.
Strategic partnerships with Bechtle, Black Box, and Concat strengthen market presence and enable further comprehensive and scalable IoT and smart building solutions.
The second infsoft Community Day at ABB in Mannheim further strengthens exchange between customers, partners, and users. The event provides current insights and practical application examples. Through expert presentations, live demos, and direct dialogue, a valuable space for knowledge transfer is created. Participants gain inspiration for their own projects and learn how solutions can be purposefully further developed.
The portfolio is expanded with new product areas:
- infsoft Reporting – flexible dashboards and reports for live and historical data from all LocAware applications
- infsoft Maintenance – digital maintenance and inspection management
- infsoft BLE as a Service (BLE aaS) – provision and operation of Bluetooth infrastructure as a scalable service offering
At the same time, a new generation of the infsoft Locator Node Dongle with BLE 6 support is introduced. The new channel sounding method enables significantly higher accuracy at low energy consumption.
With LocAware One, all key application areas – Workplace Experience, Asset Tracking, Maintenance, and Task Management – are brought together for the first time in a central mobile application. The LocAware platform thus consistently evolves into an integrated Smart Building Experience.
