An infrared (IR) thermopile sensor can be used for tracking movement and temperature of people and objects.
The infrared sensor is composed of an 8 × 8 (64) pixel thermopile array with a 60° field of view. It comes with a built-in lens with 60° viewing angle and measures actual temperature as well as temperature gradients within its viewing area.
The sensor works by detecting infrared in each of the 64 frames and converting it to temperature. The image of the object being measured is divided into a 64-frame grid. The temperature distribution is displayed in corresponding colors on the individual frames. Application is suitable for operating temperatures from -20 to 80 °C, the temperature range of the measuring object is -20 to 100°C.
Based on thermopile technology, the sensor can detect the direction of moving people and objects that are up to 7 meters away. Its coordinated array of sensing elements can even detect multiple people or objects moving in different directions. At close proximity, the sensor is capable of detecting hand movements for simple gesture control.
Continuous detection of people/objects in a room may require several cameras aimed in different directions. Also, infrared signals can be blocked by physical items (e.g. glass, wood, human body), which has to be taken into consideration for the installation.
The ability to detect moving and motionless people/objects, movement direction and measure temperature enables using the IR sensor in a wide variety of applications.
The sensor can be used for positive environmental contributions and power savings. Thermopile arrays allow people counting (additionally, this can be supported by Wi-Fi monitoring).
