PROBLEM DEFINITION
In laboratory and warehouse environments, there is often insufficient visibility into the stock levels of consumables and the current location of individual items. Reorders are frequently triggered only when staff notice low or depleted inventory during manual checks. This process ties up valuable resources, causes delays in material supply, and increases the risk of stockouts or incorrect storage. Implementing continuous, digitally supported inventory monitoring creates significant efficiency and quality gains.
SOLUTION
With digital inventory management, stock levels can be monitored in real time. Each storage compartment or container is equipped with an E-Ink display that clearly shows all relevant information such as item type, quantity, and status directly at the point of use. As soon as employees notice that materials are running low, a reorder can be triggered immediately via an integrated button on the display. This streamlines the ordering process and ensures continuous material availability. In addition, employees are automatically notified when items have been replenished or are ready to be correctly put away. TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION

For reordering consumables, an infsoft E-Ink Display 2.9″ with an integrated order button is used. The displays are mounted directly on the shelves and serve two functions: they provide digital inventory labeling and allow reorders to be triggered directly from the shelf. When a staff member notices that an item is running low, the reorder can be initiated immediately at the push of a button.
Communication between the E-Ink displays and the infsoft LocAware platform® is handled via the infsoft Locator Node Dongle, which reliably receives the signals and forwards them to the backend. All relevant information – including material number, storage location, and delivery destination – is processed in the LocAware platform® and transmitted to the connected ERP system via the interface. This seamless digital networking enables orders to be placed efficiently, transparently, and without media breaks. At the same time, it ensures that the physical storage structure is accurately linked with the digital data, minimizing errors and continuously maintaining material availability.
